MAS is pleased to announce the release of the first RALS-Annual Report providing mean blood glucose results for a hospitals during the year 2006 compared to mean blood glucose results for all participating hospitals. We identify which data belongs to a particular hospital, but we do not provide the identity of the other participating hospitals. To our knowledge, this is the first time that this kind of information has been made available.  To view an online demo, click here.

In 2006, there were over 130 participating hospitals, with over 11.3 million blood glucose test results.  Of this total, approximately 2.5 million came from the ICU and approximately 8.8 million from the non-ICU. The following tables are an example of the type of data provided in the RALS-Annual Report.

Assumptions:

  1. Blood glucose data used is all de-identified patient POC blood glucose data contained within a specific RALS-Plus database.

  2. ICU locations were identified according to the locations provided by the specific institution.

  3. Pediatric, Neonatal, Nursery, and NICU areas were excluded.

Beyond the RALS-Annual Report In the very near future, we will be offering other benchmarking products and services that will give you further insight into your hospital’s state of glycemic control and your hospital’s performance relative to other participating hospitals.  Examples of additional reports include the percentage of blood glucose results in clinically relevant ranges, comparison to other participating hospitals according to number of beds, region, type, and number of blood glucose measurements, time to target and % compliance with ACE** guidelines.

*A hospital’s quartile is a number from 1 to 4. Quartiles provide a rough approximation of your hospital's performance relative to all participating hospitals.  If hospital mean BGs are arranged in order from lowest to highest, then the one-quarter of hospitals with the lowest mean BGs are assigned a quartile of 1, representing superior relative performance.  Successive quarters are assigned quartiles of 2, 3, and 4.

**American College of Endocrinology Position Statement on Inpatient Diabetes and Metabolic Control.  Endocrine Practice.  Vol. 10. No. 1, January/February 2004,  pp. 77-82,  has formulated standards for diabetes management in the hospital.  Among these standards are the upper limits for glycemic targets, which “are intended to provide clinicians with guidelines for promoting improved outcomes”.  In particular, the guidelines recommend that patients’ blood glucose levels be less than 180 mg/dL in the general hospital units (non-ICU) and less than 110 mg/dL in the ICUs.
